BATON ROUGE, La. – LaTonya Blue scored 17 points to help lead Virginia to a 72-62 win over Maine in the consolation game of the Women’s Sports Foundation Classic Friday night.
Virginia (1-1) opened the game on a 9-2 run and never trailed.
Despite shooting well from the field in the first half (44.4 percent), Maine (0-2) was held scoreless for 5:02 of the first half and that allowed the Cavaliers to push their lead to 32-20.
The Black Bears got as close as 65-62 with under two minutes remaining. Virginia answered by scoring the next seven points of the game and holding the Maine offense scoreless to come away with their first victory of the season.
Brandi Teamer added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Brenna McGuire had 12 points, including four 3-pointers, and Jocelyn Logan-Friend added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Black Bears were led by Missy Traversi’s 17 points. Abby Schrader added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Monica Peterson had 12 points and eight rebounds.
No. 3 LSU was slated to take on Arizona State in the championship match of the tournament later Friday night. Virginia lost to Arizona State and Maine lost to LSU Thursday night.
