POLAND – Joseph L. Michael, 93, formerly of Brookdale Village, Poland, died at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center on Saturday, Nov. 13.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., on Oct. 31, 1911, the son of Nellie Daher Michael and Melad Michael.

He was educated in Lowell schools before marrying Catherine R. O’Dea on Oct. 12, 1935.

In 1943, he came to the Lewiston-Auburn area to begin his career as a sports promoter, along with his brother Sam. Together they held weekly boxing matches at Lewiston City Hall and also brought big name bands to the Lewiston Armory.

“Joe” was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church, New Auburn Social Club, and a lifetime member of the Lodge of Elk’s.

He is survived by his daughter, Maureen and husband, A. Harry Myrick, of Auburn, Dr. Robert Michael and wife, Diann, of Pine Bush, N.Y., Daniel Michael and wife, Patrice, of Dennisport, Mass., and Thomas Coulombe and wife, Patti, of Minot; nine grandchildren, Catherine Morin and husband, Mike, of Auburn, Joseph Myrick and wife, Maureen, of Lewiston, Susan Myrick, Rob, Holly, and Jenna Michael, of Pine Bush, N.Y., Elizabeth and Anna Michael of Dennisport, Mass., and Mary Coulombe, of Minot; great-grandchildren, Jacob Roberts, Liz Morin, Katie and Matthew Myrick, and Nicholas Fess; a sister-in-law, Doris Michael, of Auburn; a godchild, Mona Milo, of Lewiston; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; infant son, Millard; and 13 siblings.

It was often said that, “Joe endeared himself to all those who knew him.”
