OXFORD – Anderson Staples Post 112, American Legion and Auxiliary, held the monthly supper meeting on Oct. 11. Delegates from Boys and Girls State attended along with their parents.
Jacob Burns, Joe Colby and David Heidrich each spoke about their experience while at Boys State and Darcy Herrick on Girls State. Each delegate was presented with a citation from Post 112. David Heidrich made a surprise presentation from state Rep. Ted Heidrich and Rick Bennett to auxiliary President Fran Perkins and her husband, Phil, recognizing their golden wedding anniversary. Ray Brown from Legion Baseball Association and Bessey Motor Team gave a brief summary of the 2004 season, and introduced Kever Kenniston as his successor,
The auxiliary is collecting small personal items to be sent to Maine soldiers from the 133rd serving in Iraq for Operation Desert Stocking. For information, call Lynn at 539-2695. The auxiliary took up a collection for postage to send packages to the soldiers.
A flag retirement ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28. The public is invited. Cub Scout Pack 196 of Oxford will conduct the ceremony hosted by Anderson-Staples Post 112, sponsors of the Pack and Troop 196. People can leave flags for retirement in the new permanent drop box that has been installed outside the front entrance of Post 112 at any time. The flag will be retired and properly disposed of at the ceremony on the 28th. Anderson-Staples Post 112 is located on Route 121 near Skeetfield Road. For more information, call Lynn at 539-2695.
The Veterans Tree Lighting will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at Post 112. Everyone is welcome. Santa and his helpers will be present. Refreshments will be served. Each light honors veterans and an active service member as well as a light in remembrance of a deceased veteran. Money raised maintains the tree lights and provides gifts for the children from Santa at this event. Anyone interested in buying a light in honor or remembrance of a service member can contact Paula Bernard or Ginny Jillson at 539-4211. You may also send the service members name and $5 to Paula Bernard, 53 School House Road, Oxford, ME 04270.
