BETHEL – Thomas J. Wheeler, 74, died Friday, Nov. 26, following complications resulting from an injury.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1930, the son of Florence Hitchen and Joseph Wheeler.

He was a graduate of Berlin High School and UNH.

He retired after 31 years with the Forest Service, stationed in Ridgway, Pa. and then Bethel, and was then self-employed as a surveyor and timber cruiser.

He was active in the Bethel and Ridgway Town Councils, Bethel Historical Society, Bethel Conservation Commission, St. Leo’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Snows.

He enjoyed working on classic cars and was an avid student of history.

He married Margaret J. Potter on Nov. 15, 1952, who passed away on Nov. 26, 2001.

He is survived by his sister, Bernice Bisson, of Berlin, N.H.; four sons, Kenneth Wheeler, of Wilton, James Wheeler, of Richmond, Va., Thomas Wheeler, of Ridgway, Pa., Joseph Wheeler, of Bethel; five daughters, Jan McKenzie, of Round Rock, Texas, Margaret Troup, of Biddeford, Bridget Gehrling, of Oakland, Karen Wheeler, of Stateline, Nev., and Jacqueline Wheeler, of Presque Isle; and eleven grandchildren.
