CARTHAGE – The Carthage Historical Society members heard a program presented by Nancy Porter of Farmington recently.

Porter was involved in a reorganization project at the Farmington Historical Society last year when she discovered a journal written by Daniel Storer of Carthage covering his life from 1818 to 1867. The detailed volume described his establishment of a farm during the early years of Carthage. Porter hopes to publish the account someday.

During her research of the Storer family she was contacted by Donald P. Wagner, president of the Shakopee Heritage Society in Shakopee, Minn. His group is publishing a diary kept by Daniel Storer, a nephew of the Daniel Storer of Storer Hill, Carthage.

The Minnesota Daniel left Carthage in 1853 at the age of 21 and his diary began when he left Maine and continued until 1905. He gives an account of 50 years in Minnesota.

Storer kept in contact with his Maine relatives and frequently mentions births, deaths and marriages of friends and neighbors in Weld and Carthage. The prepublication of the diary was given to the Carthage Historical Society from the Shakopee Heritage Society by way of Porter. She distributed an eight-page summary of Daniel Storer’s day book.

With the help of Steve Brown and Robert Keith of Carthage, Porter has compiled a genealogy of the descendants of Jeremiah Story. Jeremiah’s son, Joseph, moved to Weld about 1800 where he changed his name to Storer. He married Rachel Low and many of their descendants live in Weld and Carthage today.
