LEWISTON – Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care has accepted knitted hats, mittens and lap blankets for children in the program, donated by the SEARCH program of Catholic Charities Maine. Area women knit the items for the SEARCH program.

SEARCH stands for Seek Elderly Alone, Renew Courage and Hope. Its mission is to enable frail, vulnerable elderly and those with disabilities to remain independent and in their own homes for as log as possible.

They serve 100 elderly and disabled people in Androscoggin County. With more friendly callers, visitors or part-time helpers, more people could be served. For information, call the program office at 784-0157. SEARCH is located at 15 Westminster St.

Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care has provided child development services to families of preschool children for more than 38 years. Services are given to more than 400 children and families throughout Androscoggin County.

All Head Start programs are free to eligible children and full-day child care services are available on a sliding fee scale for parents who are working, in school or participating in job training. Applications for all programs are accepted throughout the year. Call 795-4040, ext. 25, for more information or to set up an appointment.
