PARIS – Registered Maine guide Lawrence Perry is the only one who has opted for a trial among 15 people charged last year with wildlife crimes in the greater Fryeburg area.

Thirteen people, including two other Maine guides, Perry’s then-girlfriend and a Lovell selectman, pleaded guilty earlier this year to at least one hunting violations after the undercover operation during the fall 2003 hunting season by the Maine Game Warden Service. One other person is in jail in New Hampshire and his case has not yet been heard.

“I want to tell my side of the story,” said Perry, 56, of Fryeburg, during a break in court proceedings Tuesday. His lawyer, William Maselli, said Perry is a victim of an overzealous game warden who exaggerated and sometimes “fabricated” the events that led to the 31-count indictment.

Perry is expected to testify Wednesday.

Among those associated with Perry’s case who have pleaded guilty in Oxford County Superior Court are the following:

Registered Maine guide Randy S. Burnell, 43, of Brownfield, pleaded guilty Monday to 14 counts of a 26-count indictment, including three counts of driving deer, four counts of hunting deer after having killed one, two counts of unlawful hunting of bear with more than four dogs, and one count each of hunting a bear after having killed one, possessing an unregistered bear, criminal trespassing, unsworn falsification and carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle.

Burnell’s case was continued for sentencing until Jan. 6. The state is recommending he receive a sentence of 264 days in jail, with all but six months suspended and one year probation. The amount of fines were not specified.

Registered Maine guide Thomas R. Guptill, 45, of Denmark, pleaded guilty Monday to one count each of hunting a bear after having killed one and driving deer. Four other charges were dropped. He was sentenced to three days in jail on the bear charge and fined a total of $1,400 on both counts. He will start serving his sentence on Jan. 13, 2005.

Chad Nelson, 29, of Clinton, pleaded guilty July 29 to two counts of night hunting and one count each of hunting a wild animal in the closed season, hunting deer after having killed one and carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle.

Nelson received a nine-day jail sentence and had to pay a total of $3,730 in fines and court costs.

Perry’s girlfriend Terri Fowler, 49, pleaded guilty Oct. 7 to two counts of driving deer and one count of hunting deer after having killed one. Six other counts against her were dismissed. She received a three-day jail sentence and a total fine of $1,400.

In Bridgton District Court, Lovell Selectman Richard Eastman, 51, of Center Lovell pleaded guilty March 9 to one count each of exceeding the bag limit on deer, hunting deer after having killed one and driving deer.

Eastman was sentenced to three days in jail and was ordered to pay a total of $3,200 in fines.
