AUBURN – Board members and volunteers of the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society collected more than 600 pounds of pet food at their annual Holiday Pet Food Drive; held at the Shaw’s Supermarkets in Lewiston and Auburn on Nov. 20.

The shelter relies heavily on the donations made by the community of food and supplies for the animals.

More than 60 pounds of dog food and 40 pounds of cat food are needed daily to feed the nearly 3,600 animals who pass through the shelter’s doors. Drop boxes for pet food and supplies will continue to be available at both Shaw’s stores until Dec. 24.

The Humane Society provides a safe haven for homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area. The primary support for the shelter comes from fund-raising events and donations of concerned residents.

The society is located at 3312 Hotel Road. For more information, call the shelter at 783-2311 or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
