FARMINGTON – Carrie L. Shumway of Farmington will depart on Monday, Jan. 10, for a 27-month deployment in the Peace Corps. Shumway has been assigned to work with the Public Health Ministry in Nicaragua.

She graduated in May from Fordham University, New York City, with a double major in Spanish studies and urban studies, and a minor in peace and justice studies. While studying in New York City, Shumway volunteered for four years for Lifebeat, an HIV-AIDS awareness/prevention outreach organization.

In June 2003, she studied at the University of Havana, Cuba, through the University of Buffalo Cuban Studies program.

Shumway, a 2000 graduate of Mt. Blue High School, is the daughter of Carol and Alan Shumway of Farmington.
