LEWISTON – The Public Theatre, Lewiston/Auburn’s professional theater company, was recently honored by the New England Theatre Conference at its annual meeting in Portland.

The theatre was given a Special Recognition Award for “excellence in establishing and maintaining high artistic quality and offering accessibility to artists and audiences in central Maine.”

This is the second time in the last eight seasons that the conference has honored The Public Theatre for its artistic excellence and contributions to the cultural life of the region.

The award was accepted by Artistic Director Christopher Schario on behalf of the board and staff.

In his acceptance speech, Schario reminded the audience that when the theater first began, many throughout the state thought a professional theatre had no chance for survival in Lewiston/Auburn.

Now in its 14th season, The Public Theatre continues to expand its audience and receive acclaim for the quality of its productions. It is considered one of the most remarkable success stories in the area, and a cornerstone in the cultural life of Lewiston/Auburn and Central Maine, Schario said.
