LISBON FALLS – The Lisbon Library Department has announced the Milkweed Puppet Theater’s presentation of “The Adventures of Brer Rabbit” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, in the Falls Children’s Room. A snow date is Saturday, Jan. 15. Bring the family for an afternoon of entertainment as Nancy Nye brings her one-woman puppet show to share with the library patrons.

Nye has been traveling throughout Maine for the last 20 years, entertaining children and adults. Her puppets feature a mix of human and animal characters, inspired by the tradition of folkart theater. The dialogues, puppets and sets are creations of the artist.

“The Adventures of Brer Rabbit” is a production of the Milkweed Puppet Theater. The Brer Rabbit stories are popularly known in the context of the Uncle Remus stories, collected by J. Harris from early American slates.

The stories are actually thousands of years old, having roots in ancient Africa, Egypt and China, yet they are still as sassy as their American grandson, Bugs Bunny. For ages, people have delighted in hearing the adventures of this gutsy little rabbit whose wit is sharper than the teeth of Old Brer Fox, who would much rather have him for dinner than wrestle with his charm on the puppet stage.

Space is limited, so call 353-6564 for reservations. The Friends of the Lisbon Libraries are sponsoring the program, so admission is free to library patrons. Bring a dozen cookies for a cookie exchange after the performance.
