LEWISTON – The Bates College women’s basketball team, ranked No. 13 in the country, improved to 11-0 Thursday night with a 72-48 win against Colby College at Alumni Gymnasium.
Heather Taylor scored a game-high 16 points for Bates. Meg Coffin finished with 14 and eight rebounds, while Betsy Hochadel scored 11 with seven boards. Olivia Zurek finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
Tanya Rosbash and Regina Wohl both scored 11 points for the Mules. Wendy Bonner finished with 10 points and eight boards for Colby (3-6).
USM 82, UNE 38
GORHAM – Tiffany Jones scored a game-high 18 points for the University of Southern Maine en route to an 82-38 victory over the University of New England in a non-conference game Thursday evening.
Jones connected on four-of-six shots in the opening six minutes as the Huskies went on a 19-2 run to open the game and never looked back.
Essie McKinnon led the UNE attack with 10 points.
Southern Maine went on a 17-1 run just before the end of the half, increasing the lead to 46-20 going into the intermisson.
Bowdoin 62, UMF 52
BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flahery tossed in 16 points to lead Bowdoin College, the nation’s top-ranked Division III women’s basketball team, to a 62-52 victory over the University of Maine-Farmington.
Also reacing double digits for the Polar Bears were Vanessa Russell and Alison Smith with 11 and 10 points. Katie Cummings had nine assists and, along with Smith, hauled down eight rebounds.
Kari Simpson scored 22 points for Maine-Farmington to lead all scorers, while teammate Kate Lahaye netted 11 points for the Beavers.
The Polar Bears improved to 10-0 on the season and extended their regular season winning streak to 35 games.
The Beavers (6-2) drop their second game of the season, having only lost to nationally ranked Southern Maine.
