Eric Castonguay hasn’t scored the game-winning goal in every key Lewiston Maineiacs’ game this season, but it is sure starting to seem that way.
Castonguay potted a goal at 11:12 of the third period Tuesday night on a nice feed from Alex Bourret to put the Maineiacs ahead of the Quebec Remparts 3-1 at the Colisee Pepsi, and Lewiston hung on for a 3-2 win in front of 4,464 disappointed fans.
The win is the team’s first against Quebec this season, and lifts the Maineiacs’ overall record to 19-17-7. Lewiston’s win combined with a Cape Breton loss on Tuesday lifted the Maineiacs into eighth place in the overall league standings with 45 points, just three points back of Rimouski in the division with a game in hand.
“One thing we talked about this half of the season is to get better against teams in our division,” said Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin. “This is the first time that we beat them, and this is a very good thing for our team.”
As for Castonguay, his knack for scoring big goals hasn’t gone unnoticed, and playing on the top line with Alexandre Picard and Alex Bourret (both with two assists Tuesday) is part of that reward.
“We have been impressed with his ability on offense,” said Jodoin. “He can score, and we are using him because he can score goals.”
Jaroslav Halak, meanwhile, garnered first-star honors and stopped 41 of 43 shots to help the Maineiacs to the win.
“He was the difference in the game tonight, no question,” said Jodoin. “But, he is part of the team, and the whole team earned this win.”
Lewiston also unleashed a barrage of shots at Quebec’s newly-acquired goaltender, Jonathan Boutin. The final shot tally for Lewiston was 37, and Boutin stopped 34.
The game on Tuesday was also the first for Jonathan Cameron, called up late last week to replace Michael Lafleur. Cameron, according to Jodoin, skated well and seemed to adjust quickly.
“He is willing to learn,” said Jodoin. “He is a very, very good addition to this team.”
Lewiston and Quebec opened a shooting gallery in the first and second periods on Tuesday, combining for 57 shots in the two opening frames at the Colisee Pepsi.
The Maineiacs managed two goals on their 30 shots to take a 2-0 lead into the final frame.
Colby Gilbert scored his third goal in three road games Tuesday on a pass from Derek Bailey, beating Boutin with 45 seconds left in the first.
In the second, with Michael Tessier in the penalty box for the Remparts, Bobby Gates blasted a shot from the point on passes from Bourret and Picard to double his team’s lead.
The Remparts cut the lead in half at 7:21 of the third when Alexandre Radulov wrapped the puck around from behind the net and beat Maineiacs’ netminder Jaroslav Halak for the first time.
Castonguay notched his goal at 11:12 to again put the Maineiacs up by two, but Quebec captain Josh Hennessy followed at 13:10 to pull Quebec within one.
Lewiston returns to action Friday against Quebec at the Colisee, and plays again Saturday before traveling to Drummondville on Sunday.
