GREENWOOD – Several fees will for the first time be rolled into the town’s budget to offset property taxes, according to Town Manager Kim Sparks.
In the past, Sparks said, fees collected for items like boat excise taxes, building permits and dog licenses have been added to the town’s surplus. In 2005, however, such items will be broken out and listed as line items in the non-property tax revenue portion of the budget.
In addition to reducing property tax rates, Sparks said, “We’re hoping to get a better picture of what we bring in versus what we’re spending.”
According to the preliminary budget, the town expects to collect about $437,000 in fees and taxes in 2005.
In 2004, $541,668 was anticipated, but $624,201 has been received to date. Sparks already has broken down where all the money came from in 2004 and reduced the surplus for 2005.
In the 2004 budget, the town’s budget surplus was $286,588. In 2005, it’s expected to be $108,000.
The Greenwood Board of Selectmen is in the process of reviewing budget figures in preparation for the March town meeting. On Tuesday, the board discussed expected 2005 expenditures.
Sparks said the numbers are not yet complete and the town is awaiting a report from Road Foreman Alan Seames.
