What herbs are supposed to be good for a cold?

Some studies suggest goldenseal, echinacea and garlic are effective natural defenses against colds. The key is to start taking these herbs at the earliest sign of a cold. Goldenseal is known to stimulate the liver. Part of this organ’s function is to clear up infections. Echinacea cleans the blood and lymph glands, which circulate infection-fighting antibodies and remove toxic substances. Garlic has natural antibiotic effects and is known to kill germs and clear up cold symptoms. However, before you try any of these natural remedies, you should consult your physician if you have an existing health condition or are on any prescribed medication.

How fast does human adult hair grow?

The average human hair grows one-half inch per month, and, according to many sources, grows faster on the sides of your scalp than on the top (the opposite holds true for adolescents). A single hair lasts about two to four years before it falls out.

Is it true that bigger snowflakes mean less snowfall accumulation?

It depends. The fluffy, powdery type of snow – also referred to as low-density snow – is associated with very cold air. It sticks almost immediately and accumulates very rapidly. On the other hand, large flakes usually fall when temperatures are warmer. Their consistency is wet and slushy, and they are not likely to accumulate as quickly.

Sometimes, if a push of warm, moist air is exceptionally vigorous and runs into a layer of cold air, snowflakes can grow to the size of quarters and half-dollars and accumulate very quickly. Such circumstances are rather rare, however.

What is a blue northern for Texas?

A “blue northern” (more popularly referred to as a blue norther or a Texas norther) is a very sharp wintertime cold front that plunges almost due south from Canada through the Great Plains States. The air behind such a front can be frigidly cold, and the passage of such fronts through Texas has resulted in impressive temperature drops of 30 to 60 degrees within a few hours.

Such cold air is also very clear and dry. People in Texas would notice how their normally hazy sky was replaced by a dark, blue-black sky, which progressed in the same direction as from where the cold air emanated from, the north. Hence, the term “blue norther.”

Does an electric eel really produce electricity?

The electric eel is one of the only animals on Earth that can produce, store and discharge electricity. Many sources believe that it can produce up to a 600-volt electric shock. One shock from an electric eel will not kill a person, but repeated shocks could.

The shocks produced by these eels are used for a variety of useful reasons. A low intensity shock is used for both communication and for sensory perception, helping it to guide where it’s going. A high intensity shock is used to kill or stun prey. These eels are found in South American tropical regions.
