LEWISTON – AARP will offer free tax preparation and free e-filing of federal and Maine tax returns for senior citizens from noon to 4 p.m. from Wednesday, Feb. 2, through March 30, at the Multi-Purpose Center, Birch Street.

Appointments should be made through the Lewiston Senior Citizens by calling Thelma Manson at 784-2926, ext. 207, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Tax preparers are volunteers who have been tested and certified and their “mission is to provide free basic tax return preparation for the elderly and to establish the greatest degree of public trust to provide high quality service and uphold the highest of ethical standards.”

The volunteers have not been trained and are not permitted to do Schedule C, Schedule E, complex Schedule D or amended returns. However, they are qualified to do Schedule C-EZs.

Taxpayers are asked to be sure they have all the necessary forms to complete their returns and to bring a copy of last year’s returns.

The assistance is open to all Senior Citizens. Anyone who wants their refunds to go directly into a checking or savings accounts should bring a copy of a checking and/or savings statement. Refunds direct deposited can be received in four or five days, mailed checks in seven to 10 days.
