DIXFIELD – The Department of Maine, Second District Auxiliary will meet with the Second District Legionnaires at noon Sunday, Jan. 30, at Dixfield Post 100. A ham dinner will be served followed at 1 p.m. the district oratorical contest. The winner will go on to the department oratorical contest.

A district meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Second District President Edith Lemieux asks that auxiliary members bring a wrapped gift to be auctioned. All units are requested to be present to practice for the “Chirping Chick-a-Dee” show at the convention in June.

Women connecting

WILTON – The Western Mountain Women’s Connection will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the Boiler Room Restaurant, Main Street. Juanita Oftedahl of Westminster Vt., will speak on “Unfinished Projects.”

Area women are invited to attend the lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. or the dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $11, which includes gratuity and tax.

Lunch and learn series planned

RUMFORD – A Lunch and Learn Series, “Caring for Ourselves as We Age,” will be held from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at SeniorsPlus, 50 Congress St.

Participants will learn about resources that can help them plan for the future as well as tips on caring for themselves and reducing stress.

At 11:30, all are invited to stay for lunch featuring homemade spaghetti and meatballs, marinated vegetables, garlic bread, baked apples, coffee, tea or milk. A donation of $2.50 is requested of those over 60, as well as their spouses, disabled and volunteers. A $4 donation is asked of those under 60.

To reserve lunch or for more information, people should call Kim Chiasson at 364-3572. The series is a program of SeniorsPlus, the area’s agency on aging serving Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties.

Widows/Widowers Sharing program

RUMFORD – Widows or Widowers Sharing will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the United Methodist Church, Linnell Street. Louise Stickney will teach good exercises. All widows and widowers are invited. Dessert and coffee will be available after the meeting.

Quit smoking program

RUMFORD – A free Quit Smoking Program will be offered from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 3, 10 and 17, and Tuesday, Feb. 15, in the Rumford Hospital second-floor conference room A.

The program consists of four one-hour small group sessions led by Stephanie Thompson, smoking cessation facilitator for River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition. The program addresses reasons for smoking, triggers and roadblocks involved in the quitting process, methods to help quit and strategies to help people stay tobacco-free.
