NEW SHARON – A New Sharon man was listed in good condition Tuesday at a Lewiston hospital after he escaped his burning home from a second floor window.
Nicholas Whittemore of Roxy Rand Road, near the Rome town line, woke up to find his house on fire and tried to go downstairs to get out but couldn’t, New Sharon Fire and Rescue Capt. Paul LeBlond said.
Whittemore had to go back upstairs and go out a second floor window, LeBlond said. He then drove his vehicle to a neighbor’s place on the dirt dead-end road to report the fire, Assistant Chief John Baker said.
Neighbors reported Whittemore had burns on his hands, arms and elbows, he said.
LifeStar ambulance service took him to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston before firefighters arrived at the scene, LeBlond said.
A Central Maine Medical Center spokesperson said just after noon Tuesday that Whittemore was listed in good condition.
Whittemore, reached at the hospital Tuesday night, declined to comment.
The fire was reported at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, and the entire house was in flames when firefighters arrived, Baker said. The older-style farmhouse is nearly a half mile off Route 27 and about 3 miles from Route 2.
Whittemore had lived in the house for several years, he said.
Twenty-six firefighters from New Sharon, Farmington, Chesterville and Industry fought the blaze, Baker said.
New Sharon firefighters were back on the scene Tuesday morning when the fire rekindled. Firefighters shuttled water from the town’s supply near the Sandy River Farm Supply in the center of New Sharon.
The house was a complete loss, Baker said.
He said he didn’t know the extent of Whittemore’s injuries. He also didn’t know yet if he had insurance.
