LEWISTON – Art students at Holy Cross School are working on two community projects – the school’s second annual “Evening Under the Stars” auction and the Central Maine Medical Center’s annual fund-raising gala in March.

For the school auction, students are designing 20 paintings to resemble stained glass windows. Painted on canvas boards with acrylic paints, the designs are a collaborative effort of every student in the classes, said Dawn Simpson, art teacher.

Upon completion, each painting will be framed and donated to the auction to help raise money for an improved computer technology program.

Sixth-grade students are creating centerpieces for Central Maine Medical Center’s annual gala. The theme, “It’s a Small World, Kids Helping Kids” will be depicted by a project incorporating Styrofoam balls attached to plywood bases and decorated to look like globes with children of all nationalities floating above on curled wire.

“This project will likely take the students the remainder of January and most likely into February to complete,” said Simpson.
