MECHANIC FALLS – The Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult and Community Education winter program is under way. The Learning Center is accepting new day and evening students for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and General Educational Development testing.

Babysitter’s Training/Child and Infant CPR: Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or guardians. Training will include child and infant CPR.

Babysitters must be 11 by the end of the class and attend all seven sessions to obtain a certificate. The class is sponsored by the American Red Cross from 2:45 to 5 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28, April 4, 11. Registration fee is $45/$50, Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident.

Office 2000 – Excel: An electronic spreadsheet program course that will cover skills for creating, managing, saving and retrieving spreadsheets from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28. Access is the database management in Microsoft Office.

Learn how to organize facts and maintain data electronically. The program is useful for small businesses to handle names and addresses, track reservations and stock inventory. It will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays for two weeks starting March 21. Registration is $15/$20.

“Understanding World War II: From Its Roots to the Berlin Airlift”: from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5; registration, $22/$25.

Cake Decorating: It is for beginners from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. Pick up or ask for a list of materials ($10 to $12). Registration is $20/$23.

Microsoft Word: An introductory course in word processing using Microsoft Word 2000 and Windows XP from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays starting March 2 for four weeks. Registration is $30/$40, with a $5 lab free.

“Keeping Your PC Healthy”: Learn how to speed up the computer for first-rate performance by scheduling regular maintenance from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3. Registration is $5/$7.

First Aid: The American Red Cross course is designed to teach the basics of first aid. Those who successfully complete the course will receive an American Red Cross first aid basics card. It will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, March 7. Registration is $40/$45.

Line Dancing: No partner necessary. Children 8 and older are welcome with parent or guardian. It will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5, 12. Registration is $25/$28.

Knitting Workshop: Pat Demers will instruct. Basic knitting skills are required. The class will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 9, 16, 23 and 30. Registration is $4/$5.

Buying and Selling on the Internet: Learn how to use eBay to the best advantage. It will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 10, 24, 31. Registration is $15/$17. Prerequisite is familiarity with computer use.

Job Hunting on the Internet: Learn where to go on the Internet to locate job-hunting resources, including Maine Job Service listings, temporary employment agencies and newspaper classifieds from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10. Registration is $5/$7.

Card Embroidery: Create embroidery projects to use as greeting cards or to frame. No embroidery experience is necessary. Samples in Adult Education office. Monday, March 14, 21, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. A minimum of six people is needed to run the program. Registration is $8/$9 and lab fee for materials, $3 paid to instructor.

Maine Driving Dynamics: It offers drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities. The five-hour course will include discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes and the basic elements that challenge drivers on Maine’s highways.

The course format engages students with videos and discussion/participation. Those completing the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record. It will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, March 14 and 15. Registration is $25.

Fitness for Life: Aerobics classes feature step aerobics and resistance exercises to tone and strengthen the entire body. Classes are taught in levels to accommodate adults of all abilities and fitness types. Teens are welcome with an attending adult. Registration will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 21.

Six-week sessions will continue from 7 to 8:30 p.m. through the school year at the Poland Community School. When school is not in session, classes will not be held. Registration is $25/$28. Instructor is Deb Conway, 998-5282.

Dried Flower and Twig Wreath: Complete a twig wreath with dried flowers, suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Bring a glue gun, clippers or utility shears. It will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 23. Registration is $5/$6 with a lab fee of $25 paid to instructor.
