LEWISTON – Holy Cross School fifth-grade students recently completed a social studies unit dedicated to American Indian history. Traditional textbook material was combined with hands-on activities to help students gain a better understanding of the Native American culture.

Exploration included the construction of model Native American homes, participation in a Candy Dance, a dance traditionally performed at pow wows and writing legends. The students made masks and created American Indian displays for Academic Night to be held in March.

In addition, students were given the opportunity to make their own drums and experiment with drumming and dancing.
