NORWAY – Arthur Gilbert Davis, 85, of Oxford, died Friday morning, Feb. 25, at Stephens Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side.

He was born May 19, 1919, in Westbrook, the son of Clarissa Edwards Davis and Robert Chapman I. He was a graduate of Mechanic Falls High School, and he served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, in the South Pacific, attaining the rank of Platoon Sergeant before being honorably discharged.

He was a self-employed barber for many years. He was proud of his service as a State Police Reserve Officer in the 1950s. Later, he was a corrections officer, retiring as a supervisor from the Maine Correctional Center in South Windham. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion in Mechanic Falls.

On July 10, 1945, he married Barbara George of Mechanic Falls. They were looking forward to their 60th wedding anniversary that was coming up this summer. They cherished the many years they had together. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and going for walks with his adopted dog, “Max.” He enjoyed hunting and fishing at his camp in Upton, and he was an avid fan of boxing. He will always be remembered and loved for the way he took care of us all.

He leaves behind his wife of 59 years; a son, James Davis and his companion, Marilee Cooper, of Oxford; a daughter, Genie and husband, John Petrocelli, of Mechanic Falls; five grandchildren, Chris Davis, Lisa Paradis and husband, Andre, Laura Larrivee and husband, Paul, Johnny Petrocelli and wife, Cassie, and Jeremy Petrocelli and fiance, Erin Murphy; and three great grandchildren, Joshua, Grace, and Emilie.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris and Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway for the loving care they gave him.
