DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine (AP) – Fire officials are investigating a fast-moving blaze that consumed the Dover-Foxcroft Solid Waste Recycling Center, causing up to $1 million in damage.

The fire, which was discovered at 7 a.m. Friday, destroyed heavy machinery, compactors and records. The loss could reach $1 million, said Town Manager Jack Clukey.

“It was a very big loss to the town, but I’m very thankful there were no personal injuries, and it’s all loss of property we can replace,” said Town Manager Jack Clukey.

Dover-Foxcroft Fire Chief Joseph Guyotte said Joe Sands, the town’s solid waste supervisor, spotted the fire and rushed to the building in an effort to save the town’s loader. When he opened the door to remove the vehicle, the building erupted in flames, Guyotte said.

“When he opened up the door, she lit up,” the fire chief said.

Firefighters from neighboring communities helped put out the fire, which was fueled by the building’s wood interior and the large amoutns of recyclable materials.

Clukey said the loss included a bucket loader, a forklift, compactors, office equipment and records. The building was fully insured, he said.
