AUBURN – L/A Arts is bringing Maine children’s book author Lynn Plourde to Fairview School for an author-in-residence program for grade two on Friday, Monday and Wednesday, March 4, 7 and 9.

During an opening assembly for second-graders on Wednesday, Plourde presented an interactive reading of some of her picture books: “Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud,” “Wild Child” and “School Picture Day.” She led students in a dramatization of one of her books, with students playing parts using simple props.

Plourde will visit each classroom three times over the residency and teach students how to write stories, including how to get ideas, plan and revise their stories. Parents are welcome. They should call Fairview School for details at 784-3559.

After 13 years of writing children’s books, Plourde had her first picture book, “Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud,” published in 1997. “Pigs” was illustrated by Caldecott-medalist John Schoenherr and was selected as a School Library Journal 1997 Best Book.

Her 2005 books will be “Pajama Day,” another fun book in the Mrs. Shepherd series, plus “Dad, Aren’t You Glad?” Plourde also co-authored a guidebook, “A Celebration of Maine Children’s Books,” with her husband, Paul Knowles.

Plourde has worked for 21 years as a Maine public school speech-language therapist and has had 10 educational books for teachers published, including the “Classroom Listening and Speaking” series.

Plourde is a Skowhegan native. She lives in Winthrop with her family.
