LOVELL – Dogs in Lovell are going to have to learn to hold their tongues. Owners of dogs that cause a disturbance can now face a $50 fine under the barking dogs ordinance adopted by voters at Saturday’s town meeting.

The ordinance says that no one who owns or takes care of a dog in the town “shall allow such dog to unnecessarily annoy or disturb any person by continued or repeated barking, howling or other loud or unusual noises any time day or night.”

Anyone disturbed by a loud dog may file a written complaint. That will result in a warning to the dog’s owner. If the disturbance continues, a $50 fine will be levied.

In other business, voters turned down an amendment to the town’s zoning ordinance that would have allowed cluster developments as well as changing the rules for open space preservation and subdivisions.

All budgetary items were passed, the largest of which was $95,000 for the town’s waste facilities. Funds for winter roads and maintenance of roads and bridges were allocated from the auto excise taxes and surplus.

Stephen Goldsmith was elected to a three-year term as selectman. Ron McAllister was elected building inspector, and was recommended to selectmen for appointment as code enforcement officer. Town Clerk Sherry Bois was re-elected to her post.
