NORWAY – Congressman Mike Michaud held meetings on Social Security on Feb. 23 in Norway and Fryeburg, with 80 people attending.

Michaud provided background information on the system, countering information from the Bush administration’s description of the system as being “in crisis.” He took questions from the audience.

Roy Gedat and Marge Medd worked with the Michaud staff on the Norway session and Myra Bethel arranged for the Fryeburg session. Additional town hall meetings will be held later in the spring in other parts of the county.

The Maine Democratic Party is holding town hall meetings around the state to introduce the new staff and officers. Attending the Lewiston session were representatives from the Oxford County Democrats, including Miriam Laster and Gedat of Norway, Cathy Newell of Greenwood, and Ed Cundy of Paris.

Newell, chairwoman of the Oxford County Democrats, was a panel member for the question-and-answer session, joining Michaud, Congressman Tom Allen, Party Chairman Patrick Colwell and Androscoggin County Chairwoman Nancy Perry.

The Democratic House leadership held an event at the State House on Feb. 24 for House candidates in 2004. Attending from Western Maine were Timothy Carter of Bethel, Margaret Reimer of Bridgton and Gedat

They met with Sen. Bruce Bryant and Rep. John Patrick as well as attending leadership meetings.

Colwell has named Newell as chairwoman of the Administration Committee, which oversees the internal operations of the party, including personnel policies and hiring. The Democratic State Committee met Feb. 27 with Patrick, Gedat and Newell attending.

The Oxford Hills Democrats held an organizational meeting on March 6 at the home of Miriam Laster in Norway with representatives from Waterford, Harrison, Norway and Paris attending.

Medd, chairwoman of Enterprise Maine, and Gedat, president of the Norway Downtown Development Committee, reported on the success of grant funding for several economic development projects involving the Oxford Hills. Plans were made for several upcoming events.
