AUBURN – In recognition of National Nutrition Month, the YMCA is offering a “Nutrition Basics” workshop as part of its Wellness 101 monthly series. The class is for anyone with questions regarding nutrition and eating habits.

The same class will be offered at two times. Attendees can attend one or both on Wednesday, March 23. The first class will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon and the second is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The same topics will be covered in each class. Those interested should register at the YMCA front desk.

Participation is free to YMCA members and nonmembers. The classes will be held at the YMCA, 62 Turner St., with Doug McFarland and Patricia Caldwell leading the workshop.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the free movie, “Super Size Me,” which will be shown at the YMCA on Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19. People must call the YMCA to reserve free tickets. It is a separate event from the nutrition workshop.

McFarland has been the health and fitness director at the YMCA for seven years and is a certified personal trainer. He has a BS in community health education and has wellness certificates from the national YMCA.

Caldwell is the wellness coordinator at the YMCA, where she has worked since 1986. She is a registered nurse, cardiac rehab nurse specialist, exercise specialist and is certified in polarity therapy bodywork and integrated yoga and is also a certified pilates instructor.

Both have extensive education and experience in nutrition and helping individuals find ways to make healthy eating part of their lifestyle.

The Wellness 101 series is designed to introduce the principles of several wellness issues that face society today. The goal is to help individuals in the L/A community make informed and educated decisions on healthy lifestyles.
