PARIS – The Maurice Dance Theatre Performance Team brought home a first-place trophy at a Dance America/Dance Olympus Competition on Feb. 19.

The competition, held in Brockton, Mass., showcased 117 groups performing ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, line and production routines. Competitors came from all over New England and as far away as New York to be judged.

Three professional dancers and choreographers serving as judges scored a maximum of 100 points each based on the performers’ stage presentation, emotional and technical execution, choreography, precision and costuming.

The Maurice Dance Theatre Performance Team scored a 259 out of a perfect 300, and was awarded first place in the Intermediate Hip-Hop Division.

The win earned them the right to compete at the Dance America/Dance Olympus National Finals to be held in New York City this summer, but the team opted not to pursue the opportunity.

Following the competition, the eight team members and three instructors attended dance workshops with Dance Olympus guest instructors and choreographers.

The dance theater is owned by John and Allyssa Maurice. Community members can see the dance team’s award-winning routine at the theater’s 13th semiannual recital in May.
