Fayette voters to meet in special town meeting

FAYETTE – Residents will be asked to consider four articles at a special town meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on April 19. Voter registration will be accepted at the Town Office during regular business hours and at the meeting.

According to Town Manager Mark H. Robinson, the meeting is being held to address government administration and other budget deficiencies.

On the draft warrant is an article totaling $2,597 for Starling Hall renovations and Town Office windows from a designated fund. Selectmen would also like to transfer funds to and from the undesignated fund as follows:

• $22,203 for the salt shed.

• $500 for scholarship.

• $49 for the library.

• $2,513 for bicentennial.

• $241 returned to fund from historical reprint.

Robinson said $10,000 was cut from the 2004-05 budget for the town manager’s salary when voters participated in the last annual town meeting. Voters will be asked to approve an article permitting selectmen to transfer a maximum of $9,000 from other departments to cover the projected overage for his salary for the fiscal year ending June 30.

Since taking the position in September, Robinson said he is “correcting the things that need correcting.” He has extended staff time for more general organization as well as day-to-day business financial management. He has also made improvements in secure cash management procedures.

“My job is to make Fayette calm, serene and well-managed,” he said Friday. It is also to “stabilize and decrease the anxiety around local government.”
