NORWAY – The Mountain Poets Society met March 31 at Fare Share Commons, 447 Main St., to share poetry readings and discussion. Eight poets were in attendance.

A variety of poetry was read by leader Lisa Moore, Rob Knoll, Tom Foley, Rockie Graham, Jennifer Otterson, Lisa Campobasso, John Governale and George Twine. The society is a spinoff of the Bethel Area Poets Society co-founded by Rockie Graham and brought to Norway in 2002.

The evening offered a special version of poetry designed and written by Moore that consisted of random words jotted down on a calendar for the month of February as the day occurred, Moore said. The words were stacked together in a way that allowed them to flow together in a certain style of poetic rhythm.

The gathering also inspired some singing of Irish melodies and a poem “Somewhere in the Silence” by Foley. Another poem, titled “Preface to My Favorite Poem,” was written by Knoll. The society has 17 members with more added during the summer.

The Mountain Poets Society meets the last Thursday of each month, and invites anyone interested in poetry to join the group. There will be a special event, “Too Cold for the Porch II,” that will offer readings by area poets for the public at 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the Commons. Poets may sign up at 6:30 p.m. to read for five minutes. A $1 donation to the Commons will be appreciated.

The summer event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. July 9, at the Norway Memorial Library on Main Street. Those wanting more information should e-mail m3d@megalink.net or rockhead@adelphia.net.
