RUMFORD – The North Oxford Unit of the American Cancer Society held a Relay For Life Rally on March 24 at the Eagles Club, kicking off the fund-raising campaign.
Approximately 130 attended the rally. Area cancer survivors were invited for a spaghetti supper to celebrate their courage in the fight against cancer.
The North Oxford Unit members and the Relay For Life Committee took the opportunity to honor David Saphier, PA, with the presentation of the 2005 Caregivers’ Award.
Diane Mitchell, unit president, submitted Saphier’s name for the award, given in recognition of the dedication, care and compassion shown to area cancer patients and their families.
The unit also recognized the sponsors of the event: MeadWestvaco, Fraternal Order of Eagles, town of Rumford, Franklin Savings Bank, Hannaford, Carrabassett Spring Water, Rumford Hospital, Logger Rescue and the Sun Journal.
The annual Relay for Life will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, at Hosmer Field. The committee is looking for teams and/or sponsors. Call Mitchell at 364-8358 to register.
