YARMOUTH – North Yarmouth Academy inducted new members into the Oliver Otis Howard Chapter of the Cum Laude Society in a ceremony on April 5. The society is a national organization that encourages and honors the highest levels of scholarship. Scholarship is based on the students’ cumulative average beginning in the freshman year.

Seniors inducted were Katy Briggs of Pownal, James Connors of North Yarmouth, Amanda Dodson of Raymond, Elizabeth Griffin of Yarmouth and Chris Poliquin of Cumberland.

Juniors inducted were Brian Chin of Yarmouth, James Giberson of Cumberland Foreside, Harry Hanson of Bowdoinham and Mary Longley of Brunswick.

The induction ceremony featured a talk by Andy Place, a 1991 NYA graduate who is a third-year medical student in the joint PhD/MD program at Dartmouth College. He completed his PhD in pharmacology in 2003, researching naturally occurring plant-derived chemicals that may be useful in the treatment and prevention of cancer.
