FARMINGTON – The Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset counties will hold the annual used book sale Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8, at the Elks Lodge in West Farmington. The hours on Saturday will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Books may be left at the lodge after April 15. Donors are asked not to include textbooks, magazines, Reader’s Digest Condensed Books or encyclopedias.

The sale is a major fund-raiser for the literacy organization. The group trains volunteer tutors to help adults improve their literacy skills on a one-to-one, confidential basis. Through their efforts, teen tutors are trained to assist their peers and younger students. In addition, they support family literacy programs and provide readers in schools and nursing homes.

The Franklin-Somerset Affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America has been working for 26 years to raise the level of literacy so that Maine residents have access to the full range of economic, social and personal opportunities.
