LEWISTON – The Maine Arts Commission and Maine Humanities Council awarded the Franco-American Heritage Center at St. Mary’s a $1,500 grant to plan a historical mural.

A Planning Committee was formed at the center to formulate plans for an historical mural depicting the life of the Franco-Americans of the community. People from different walks of life knowledgeable in the history and experiences of the Franco community were invited to participate in the planning stages of the approximate 11-foot by 11-foot story-telling wall mural.

The group met for three hours to discuss ideas, talk about their own experiences and put a plan together that would include all aspects of a Franco immigrant’s life, including social, family, religious and work.

A pending grant from the Maine Arts Commission with the “Artists in Maine Communities” is being reviewed. Artists will use the document produced by the Planning Committee to prepare a model, which will return to the committee for approval. From there the work will begin if the project is funded.
