FARMINGTON – A New Sharon woman convicted of animal cruelty will undergo a psychological evaluation before she is sentenced, a judge said Friday, making it part of her bail conditions.
Carol Murphy, 61, of Lane Road, will be examined Wednesday and Thursday, May 3 and 4, in Augusta, Franklin County Superior Court Justice Joseph Jabar ruled. She is also to have no contact with a witness in the case.
Last month, a jury found Murphy guilty of one count of cruelty to animals and four counts possessing animals without a state permit. In March 2004, the state seized about 60 animals from her property, most of them in her home. Several had died from starvation, dehydration and hypothermia.
Sentencing was scheduled April 1, but it was postponed after defense attorney Andrews Campbell said he didn’t notify Murphy of the date, and she had not undergone a psychological exam as ordered by the court.
