DOVER-FOXCROFT (AP) – Police vehicles bearing the name of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department are slated to appear in a feature film about a young kidnap victim.

Sheriff John Goggin told county commissioners Tuesday that he has given the green light for Whisper Productions Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, to use his department’s name on vehicles in the movie, “Whisper.”

The film, set partly in the fictitious town of Welsham in southern Piscataquis County, tells the tale of an an ex-convict and his three friends who kidnap an 8-year-old boy and take him to a remote cottage in the dead of winter.

They later learn that the boy, who plays mind games with them, also has special abilities.

Piscataquis County was selected because of its proximity to the U.S.-Canada border, said Lisa Ragosin of Whisper Productions.

When Ragosin asked Goggin for permission to use the department’s name, he initially refused because of concerns that the film might contain pornography. But he changed his mind three days later after receiving a copy of the script, the names of the actors, and photographs of the vehicles that would bear the department’s name.

“I think most of us here feel kind of flattered that they picked us to represent the law enforcement in the film,” Goggin said after the meeting.

The movie, which is expected to carry a PG-13 rating, features John Holloway of “LOST” and Dule Hill of “West Wing.” It is being produced by Gold Circle Films, which also produced “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “White Noise.”

Goggin said his department would receive no compensation but he did ask that his department be considered when the company disposed of the new GMC vehicles used in the film.

He quoted Ragosin as saying that the vehicles may be disposed of in a bidding process, and if so, she would notify the sheriff.
