FARMINGTON – Alice James Brooks announces the winner of the 2005 Beatrice Hawley Award: Brian Turner of Fresno, Calif., for his manuscript, “Here, Bullet.” He received $2,000 and publication of his manuscript in November 2005. A just-returned Iraq War veteran, he holds an MFA in poetry from the University of Oregon.

Also chosen for publication were “Forth A Raven” by Christina Davis and “The Pitch” by Tom Thompson. Both authors reside in New York City; they each receive $1,000 and publication in 2006.

Davis received her BA and MA from the University of Pennsylvania and her M.Phil. in modernist literature from the University of Oxford. She is co-editor of “Teachers & Writers” magazine and T & W Books.

Thompson has degrees from Dartmouth College, the University of Sussex (UK) and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His previous collection, “Live Feed,” was published by Alice James Books in 2001.

Alice James Books, a cooperative poetry press, has received attention following the celebration of its 30th anniversary in 2003. The Beatrice Hawley Award is given annually for an original manuscript of poetry.
