LEWISTON – The city of Lewiston has announced that Ryan Reed, a senior at Lewiston High School, is the recipient of the Alfred A. Plourde Memorial Scholarship Award. The $500 award was presented to the senior at the May 3 City Council meeting by Councilor Normand W. Rousseau and Mrs. Alfred (Janice) Plourde.

Rousseau said, “Freddie, as he was usually referred to, loved everything about the city of Lewiston. He was proud to live here, proud to work here both as city treasurer and then mayor, and was proud to raise a family here. He also believed in striving toward goals and in the abilities of Lewiston youth. It is, therefore, very fitting that a scholarship legacy continues to carry on his memory.”

The scholarship was established in 1990 for presentation annually to the Lewiston High School senior demonstrating the most interest and promise in a public service career.

Seniors apply each year by submitting an essay titled “The Role of the Young Political Leader in the New Millennium,” along with a statement of public service goal and transcript.

The Lewiston City Council selects the recipient each year, and Reed’s winning essay stressed the importance of young political leaders motivating youth to act in the political system by voicing their opinions and by voting, as well as acting as role models.

Rousseau commended Reed’s three-year membership on the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council, recently acquiring the rank of Eagle Scout, his leadership of Boy Scout Troop 116, his service as captain and as a varsity member of the Lewiston High School debate team, and his service as a youth representative to the Colisee Advisory Board.

Reed has been accepted into the Social Sciences Department at the University of Maine at Farmington and will pursue his goal of becoming a high school history teacher.
