The law passed recently by the Maine Legislature to promote the enforcement of prohibition seems to be supported very widely by public opinions. Given the principle of State prohibition, the Sturgis Law, as it is called, embodies, it seems to us, the logical and the most promising method of enforcing it. A bi-partisan commission of three, two to be members of the dominant party, has been created. The members of this commission are known as Enforcement Commissioners; they are “authorized to exercise in any part of the State all the common law and statutory powers of sheriffs in their respective counties in the enforcement of the law against the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors.”

While still paid less than the state average by more than $39 each week, Lewiston-Auburn employees in the manufacturing field continued to make small gains in their weekly earnings in the most recent month posted.
