OXFORD – Finishing a 10-week session with Debi Irons at the Boxberry School, the Art Moves Dance Troupe gave a small performance with the Boxberry students.

“It is inspiring for the Boxberry students to see what they can achieve one day if they stick with dance,” said Irons, owner and choreographer at Art Moves Dance Studio on Cottage Street, Norway.

At Boxberry, movement is an important part of the school day. Each morning starts with a half hour of physical activity; for example, dance, yoga or sports.

“Movement centers the mind in order to be ready for academic learning – and it gets the sillies out,” said Eliza Beghe, assistant teacher at Boxberry and yoga instructor.

Boxberry teachers are aware of the need for movement in children throughout the school day. “How can a child possibly pay attention to learning if all his or her energy is going in to not fidgeting in a chair?” said Dareth Law, pediatric OT and Boxberry parent.

The Boxberry School has been a state-certified, independent elementary school in Oxford since 2003. A pre-kindergarten program is being added to the curriculum starting in September. For more information, call 743.9700 or visit www.boxberryschool.org.
