CANTERBURY, Conn. (AP) – A 10-year-old girl drowned Sunday morning while swimming in a pond behind a home, state police said.

Troopers did not immediately identify the child, who was flown by helicopter to Hartford Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

State police and members of the Canterbury Volunteer Fire Department responded to the home off Butts Bridge Road on a report of a missing girl who had been swimming in the pond.

Members of the Quinebaug Valley Regional Dive Team searched the pond for nearly 30 minutes before finding the girl under the water. Resuscitation efforts began and she was flown to the hospital.

Troopers were investigating the incident.
