OQUOSSOC – More than 70 members and friends of the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association gathered May 20 for the first meeting of the season.

Following the traditional potluck meal, Quimby Pond residents Marcia and Rick Baker enhanced the knowledge and imaginations of all with slides and descriptions of their recent trip to the Amazon.

As part of a 16-person medical mission team, the Bakers gathered with other physicians and nurses from Maine in Manaus, Brazil. While awaiting the arrival of their World Vision-owned boat, Rick spent his time fishing, as it turned out…for piranhas, while Marcia set out to see much of the native flora and fauna, brilliant parrots, green kingfishers, spiders, mahogany trees, mushrooms and orchids.

Following that, they settled down to the main focus of their visit. Applying their skills and dispensing team-supplied meds, the doctors and nurses treated all comers as their boat made stops along the river. Photos of homes, everyday life and close-ups of children brought the audience a little closer to South American neighbors and to this program of caring.

Those attending were reminded that the Strawberry Festival and tag sale are scheduled for Friday, July 15, in Oquossoc. Call Roger Noyes or Tim Baker for tag sale pick-up.

The club willl again award week-long scholarships to the Bryant Pond Conservation Camp. One boy and one girl, students from Rangeley’s Middle School, have been chosen for the honor.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 15, a change from the traditional third Thursday to enable Rangeley residents to attend a town meeting to be held on the usual meeting night.

The Eagles’ Team will coordinate the 5:30 p.m. potluck meal. Members should bring either a main dish, salad or dessert. The clubhouse is on Old Skiway Road.
