LEWISTON – A special luminaria ceremony held during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Androscoggin County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived.

Luminarias – candle lanterns – will be lit at Lewiston High School at 10 p.m. Friday, June 17. Those who wish to buy a luminaria can contact Diane Gatchell at 782-0786. The cost is $10 per candle.

Relay For Life is an overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members will gather with tents and sleeping bags to join more than 4,000 communities nationwide that are hosting relays. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.

Androscoggin County’s cancer survivors, anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, will kick off the relay at 6 p.m. June 17 with the official survivors’ lap. Information about forming a team or walking in the survivors’ lap is available by calling 225-5767. For more information on cancer, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or visit www.cancer.org.
