PAXTON, Mass. (AP) – Letters, teddy bears, poems and other mementoes that poured into Worcester fire stations after six firefighters were killed in a 1999 warehouse blaze were to go on display today at Anna Maria College.

Fire Lt. Donald Courtney said the exhibit, which runs through the end of the month, marks the first time the items have been on display since the 1999 fire at the Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse.

“We would keep every crayon mark,” Courtney said. “If it was important enough to send, it was important enough to keep.”

Anna Maria President William D. McGarry told the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester that the college was privileged to host the display.

The exhibit includes rosary beads, religious medals and a cartoon of Betty Boop saluting the six firefighters killed in the blaze. Firefighters badges from Germany and Spain and a firefighter’s shirt from Japan also are on display. Two long reading tables are stacked with cards, letters and children’s drawings. Another table has newspapers from that week.

Anna Maria offers courses in fire science, and gave posthumous degrees to the six firefighters killed. The college also has set aside scholarships for their children, McGarry said.
