PORTLAND (AP) – Alex Romero’s bases-loaded double was the key hit as the New Britain Rock Cats rallied for four runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 12-9 Sunday in the Eastern League.

The 12-run offense marked a season-high for the Rock Cats (21-34), who snapped a five-game losing streak and salvaged the finale of the four-game series with Portland.

Jared Sandberg’s two-run homer was the big blow for the Sea Dogs (29-21).

Portland claimed a 3-0 lead in the second inning and led 5-3 after three, but the Rock Cats bounced back to go ahead 7-5 by the middle of the third.

The Sea Dogs entered the ninth leading 9-8, but the Rock Cats jumped all over relief pitcher Marc Deshenes (3-1), who gave up two walks, three doubles and a single.

New Britain’s Justin Olson (4-6) picked up the win with two innings of effective relief.
