FARMINGTON – Franklin Memorial Hospital will host a public concert featuring the Stratton Elementary All-Star Steel Band at noon on Thursday, June 9, in the Bass Room.

The All-Star Steel Band is made up of 14 students in grades five through eight, who have been practicing and playing the steel drum for one to two years.

The group of young performers practice each week as a group and many students spend their recesses practicing.

The steel drum is a skillfully hammered 55-gallon oil drum, which has been tuned to produce tones. The instrument carries the full chromatic range of notes and can produce just about any type of music.

“This group has had several opportunities to perform this year,” said Paula Stevens, band director.

“The most noteworthy opportunity was a performance for the Maine House of Representatives in the State House in Augusta.”

The concert is free and open to the public. Those attending are welcome to bring a bag lunch.
