NEW GLOUCESTER – Several learning experiences will be offered at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, during June

Ten wood coatings will be discussed, including surface preparation for old and new projects, knots and blemishes, period-appropriate finishes, stripping and related topics at a workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 11. Chris Becksvoort, nationally known woodworker and author, will be the instructor. The fee is $30. Preregistration is required.

Learn a lot about herbs, how to grow them and where to grow them as well as keeping them going and how to use them at the herb garden design workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 11. Free starter plants will be included. The fee is $40. Preregistration is required.

Lavender is a well-known but little understood herb. Some people claim it won’t grow in New England yet the Shakers have been growing it for 200 years. Learn about varieties of lavender, planting them, propagating, harvesting and craft and culinary uses. The Growing Lavender Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18. Free lavender will be included. The fee is $40. Preregistration is required.

Chair caning is an ability worth having to rescue family heirlooms or to set up a repair trade or join the antique trade. Learn the seven-step method of chair caning. Bring a sound chair to the workshop. Supplies will be provided for the chair and one-on-one instruction will be given. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 25. The fee is $30 and preregistration is required.
