LEWISTON – Volunteers of America are raising funds for a mission to help the children of Belize, Central America.

During June, residents can return bottle and cans to the Lewiston Redemption Center, 700 Lisbon St.; Lisbon Falls Redemption Center, 617 Lewiston Road, Lisbon Falls; or the Mechanic Falls Redemption Center, 128 Lewiston Road, Mechanic Falls.

One hundred percent of the donations will go to help with the cost of the mission trip. The redemption center owners will donate an additional 20 percent. For more information, contact Heather at 319-5282 or heather.douglas@voanne.org.

College prep

LEWISTON – Lewiston Adult Education still has spaces available in the summer courses.

The College Transition Program is an intensive, “get-you-ready,” practical, “cover-all-the-bases” program that touches on and sharpens all the skills needed if preparing to enter college.

Lewiston Adult Education will also offer chemistry, biology, grammar and math for college and Algebra I. There will also be business writing, MS Excel basic or intermediate, or medical terminology – all part of the certificate programs.

Birthday luau

MONMOUTH – Edwina Stevens, 95, of Leeds, celebrated her birthday Hawaiian style. A festive Hawaiian luau birthday party was given in her honor by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, the youngest being 3 months old, at the Monmouth Fish and Game.

Am and Russ Hallowell played guitars and sang for the guest of honor. There were games and gifts.

Art show

POLAND SPRING – The Poland Spring Preservation Society announces its second annual art show to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 2, on the grounds of the Poland Spring Resort, Route 26.

The alternate bad weather date is Sunday, July 24. In 2004, the judged competition attracted approximately 75 artists from all over Maine and a few from out of state.
