LEWISTON – Lewiston Middle School eighth-grader Travis Laliberte was called to the front of his science class May 19 by Principal Maureen Lachapelle for a surprise presentation by Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. and Lewiston Youth Advisory Council Chairwoman Katie Lauze.

Laliberte was presented the May 2005 Mayor’s Citation of Excellence in recognition of his outstanding technical abilities and willingness to assist others. Councilor Stavros Mendros, who had nominated Laliberte along with Salvation Army Captain John Bennett, was also in attendance.

Guay said, “Travis, we applaud you for stepping up to the plate’ by utilizing your lighting skills for the fourth annual Salvation Army Bluegrass Festival fund-raiser recently held at Lewiston Middle School. In addition, not only did you provide very valuable technical assistance at a moment’s notice, but you also demonstrated a great attitude!”

The citation program is a partnership between the Lewiston Mayor’s Office and the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council, and nominations for the June Mayoral Citation of Excellence are due in the mayor’s office no later than June 10.

A one-page nomination of a Lewiston middle school or high school youth must focus on an action or accomplishment deemed as “extraordinary” or “above and beyond” that has occurred within the last two months. Nominations may be sent to Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr., 27 Pine St., Lewiston, or via dottie@ci.lewiston.me.us.
