BETHEL – The fourth annual Midsummer Festival will start at noon on Sunday, June 19, in “The Meadow,” half a mile west of Bethel on Route 2.
Special activities for Father’s Day will include a presentation by the Neville Companye, whose members are part of the British Plate Armour Society. They will be wearing armor and demonstrating swordsmanship from the time of the War of the Roses. Highland Mary Morris dancers will perform traditional dances of the British Isles.
There will be arts and crafts activities for all ages in which people can make a giant dreamcatcher or a personal dreamcatcher, a play sword, fairy wings for costume decoration, flower garlands or Tibetan prayer flags.
People also can participate in a traditional “Midsummer Pole” maypole-like dance, fly a kite, play a drum in the drumming circle or walk a labyrinth.
This year the featured musical performer is acclaimed international musician Conni St.Pierre. Her latest release was named the No. 1 New Age Instrumental of 2003 by Wind and Wire. She will be playing flute, celtic harp and keyboard, and feature songs from her “Legends Trilogy” CD releases. The All-Media guide calls her music “wordless poetry and cascading sound … an exhilarating listening experience.”
The Midsummer Festival follows the Summer Solstice Sculpture “Race” Celebration, which will be held at noon, also at The Meadow.
There is still time for sculpture creators to enter their creations, organizers said. Entry forms and information are available on the Web at www.midsummerfestival.org.
The festival is sponsored by Mahoosuc Arts and the Maine Community Foundation.
A complete schedule of activities is listed on the midsummerfestival.org Web site, or people may call 824-3246 or 824-3170 for more information.
Sponsorship information for area businesses and individuals is also available on the Web site.
All events are free, open to everyone and handicapped accessible.
